About Somkhele

Since operations started in 2006, Somkhele has changed the lives of many people in the community through employment, and infrastructure, and community development, and has made significant contributions to the local and national economy.

The mine is the centre of economic activity in an area with an unemployment rate of 90%. We employ some 1,600 people, 87% of them from the community and we use the services of some 70 locally based entrepreneurs. This is the main income for some 20,000 people.

Through our Social and Labour Plan we have assisted some 20,000 community members with training, skills transfer and basic adult English, and we have provided many basic services, like water.

We believe that our operations can play a positive role in the lives of our neighbours and contribute to the South African economy.
