The number of employees at the Somkhele mine increased from 687 in July 2011 to 931 in Feb 2016. Of these, 703 employees were recruited from the Mpukunyoni area and 228 were recruited from among community members directly affected by the mine.
A total of 79% of the workforce is locally sourced (excluding security personnel who are rotated regularly), and Somkhele aims to meet a target of 80% local employment.
Somkhele exceeds targets set by the Department for Mineral Resources for employment of historically-disadvantaged South Africans (HDSA) at all levels.
50% of Tendele‚Äôs top management and middle management comprised of HDSAs (DMR 2014 target is 40%) and 62% of junior management is HDSAs (DMR 2014 target is 40%).
The Somkhele mine is at 20% employment for women in mining, and 22% for women in positions directly related to mining.
Excluding contractors, Tendele is at 29% employment for women on the mine and 40% for women employed in positions directly related to mining.
